OUR STORY AND ETHOS

Back in 2013 as a student veterinary nurse a stray cat came into my training practice- he was full of worms, fleas and mites alongside irreversible eye damage. I instantly fell in love and decided to take Burty on as my own! The rest- they say- is history- Burty was my best buddy- one of those amazing souls that we can be so lucky to meet in our lifetime, he welcomed in 3 more cats to the crew and numerous rabbits! Burty was always there for a cuddle when you needed and brought a smile to my face daily. I had the joy of having Burty in my life for 10 years until we ultimately had to say goodbye after battling mediastinal lymphoma.

I have always pushed myself to increase my education, and improve the level of care for all of my patients as if they were my own- after losing Burty- I wanted to ensure this continued even if he was no longer with me physically.

So- in October 2023, Burty’s Boutique was formed- my ethos is to encourage and educate other members of the veterinary community- whether through my own knowledge- or our amazing guest speakers , on a wide variety of subjects.

My goal is to offer Relatable, Affordable, Stress- free Veterinary CPD to both Veterinary Nurses, Vets and students. I aim to offer a ‘boutique’ experience in a relaxed format, making it easy for you to return to practice with practical knowledge to help enhance your patient care!

Welcome to the launch of our first CPD event for 2026~ early bird tickets are now available on our website, or email to book via invoice ☺️

Together we will spend the day at a beautiful seafront hotel, and cover:

The day will also include an extended lunch break to have time on the beach and relax, you may even get a chance to glimpse ‘Sammy the Seal’ a gorgeous seal who likes to hang out on the beach regularly in the area.

This day is suitable for both Veterinary Nurses and Vets.

Red rubber ETT- for me- it’s a hard NO. Why? My personal reasoning is:
We cannot measure the pressure of the cuff against the capillaries of the trachea, we cannot see the patient breathing through them, we cannot check they are totally clean, they do not tend to inflate equally on both sides of the cuff, they kink, they’re harder and more likely to cause damage.
The PVC alternatives are NOT expensive and I do not find them more difficult to use for intubation. I know if I was to be intubated- and had the choice- I wouldn’t want the red rubber ETT. The lovely team at @ace_vet_supplies will happily help you source affordable PVC ETT

Checklists DO save lives! ⭐️ There are many available out there or you could create one tailored to your practice! Main points could/should include: Patient ID- checked against their name tag. Procedure. When they last ate. Any allergies. Current medication. Breathing circuits check. Drugs counter checked. ASA level assigned and risks discussed. Consent gained from owner…… there are more- but just by these few examples see how many things we are pre emptively thinking about and avoiding any negative outcomes 💪🏻🐈‍⬛🐶

A lovely evening delivering a live, tailored webinar to a Veterinary Clinic 🐾🐾 Topics discussed this evening were Managing Hypotension under General Anaesthesia and Utilising Pulse Oximetry during anaesthesia! I had a fab time, the cats even behaved! We covered some great questions and discussion too 💓⭐️🐾 Feel free to get in touch by message or comment below for more info on our tailored webinars 🤩

Under sedation or general anaesthesia our patients need support to their joints and limbs! Nice thick bedding underneath them is important but remember a limb laying on another limb for a prolonged period of time can be sore and uncomfortable too- especially in our older/skinnier patients. We roll a towel or a blanket and place it gently between their limbs as shown- hoping they feel more comfortable and not stiff and sore on recovery 💕🐾

Our beautiful patients can’t tell us when they need a pee!! I imagine like us- if in a different environment- or feeling nervous- they may need to pee more frequently! We offer our patients a toilet trip on their way from their kennel to the dental suite- a nice bit of fresh air, leg stretch and they can relieve themselves and get nice and comfortable prior to their GA ☺️

This can sometimes be a bit of a hot topic- we do not use these tubes ever- but one floated past me for training purposes the other week and gave me the wobbles 😹 We will post more about why we aren’t keen- and what other (just as affordable AND safer) options you have regarding endo tracheal tubes soon 👀👍🐾

A true Cinderella moment happened for us this week- we chose the socks to keep our little feline patient cosy warm under anaesthesia- and it fit PURRFECTLY- we were all very excited…. Maybe we need to get out more 😅

It’s been one of those days! 👀👀 Utilising multi modal analgesia is super important and using CRI’s can be of great assistance for the longer surgeries 👍 We are planning some CPD on drug calculations including dilutions and constant rate infusions- so watch this space 👀👀🐾👍

How long did it take you working in Veterinary to take someone home?
I think I might hold the record here as Molly came home with me on day one as a trainee vet nurse! 💓 Molly was found tied into a plastic carrier bag in a skip in a supermarket car park- it has taken literally years for this little lady to come and ask and accept fuss given her traumatic start to life. Molly created a tight bond with my Nan when we lived together- so Molly stayed with Nan when I flew the nest and continued to grow in confidence and happiness.

Running a CPD company, holding events is SCARY- imposter syndrome is real. Will people want to come? Did we pick the right venue? Will the sponsors like the event? Will the delegates enjoy the day? Are the speakers fully supported? Have we chosen the right catering? Are the goody bags fun enough? Will I stand up to speak and forget everything I’ve ever learnt and feel super silly? ALL these questions and more always go through my head- regardless of that fact we have ran several events- I know that I feel all of this because I care- but phew it can be tiring! So if you’re ever feeling worried, concerned, or not good enough- know that it is normal- but also reach out and chat it through with friends and colleagues- you’ll be surprised how many of us feel this way. Also- get some fun magnets and make yourself see what you’re capable of everyone you to to the fridge 💓👍😻💪🏻

Today would have been Burty’s Birthday 💖- the legacy behind Burty’s Boutique and the reason I work so hard to stay educated and look after every single patient as if they were him. Burty was my absolute soulmate and I am so proud his name lives on within my company, grief stays with you and it’s ever changing- so although today feels rather blue without him, I still feel grateful to have met him, loved him- and will continue to do my very best to make Burty’s Boutique a success and hope he approves 💕

We ALWAYS ask our owners if they are comfortable and give consent prior to us posting any images or videos for teaching and or social media posts- in this case- our Greek Villa cat is his own independent man- so we got our consent directly from the source- we made an agreement that we could post his belly video if we fed him allllll the dreamies- best deal ever (still never got to touch the belly though) 🐾😹😻
